This past Saturday marked a major milestone for SNL with its first live coast-to-coast airing. Even Melissa McCarthy came out of warm-ups to resurrect her Sean Spicer impression, but did something seem … off about her presence? As SNL now confirms, McCarthy took part in a rare coast-to-coast effort.

Many watching SNL from home were quick to notice that McCarthy’s Easter bit didn’t feature any of the regular cast, and seemed somewhat divorced from the usual audience reaction. As UPROXX noted, McCarthy wasn’t present on the SNL set either, as audience in dress rehearsals watched the Spicer sketch on a monitor.

Vulture now confirms with NBC that McCarthy indeed shot the live sketch from “a Los Angeles studio,” and without an audience reacting to her jokes. McCarthy also Instagrammed the bit with “#LiveFromLA”:

Spicey gone wild!!! #LiveFromLA #FallonStylesSNL @nbcsnl

It’s rare of SNL to shoot live segments outside of the East Coast studio, but in this case might signify greater effort to involve celebrities cross-country. Season 42 will remain live coast-to-coast with Chris Pine on May 6, followed by McCarthy herself (in-studio) on May 13, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson closing things out on May 20.

It remains unclear if NBC intends to continue the live effort through Season 43, but stay tuned for the remaining episodes in May.
