Sammy Adams: Pharrell Told Me I Have Sensory Deprivation

Rising pop rapper Sammy Adams is working diligently on his debut studio effort ‘I Wish,’ which boasts production assists from Bei Maejor and Pharrell Williams. Although Adams is not a household name yet, nabbing two established hitmakers on his album was a major feat for the 25-year-old artist.

“We’re pretty lucky because Pharrell and Bei Maejor, you know, took risks because I wasn’t like a big name,” Adam told the Boombox. “You know, sorta big but not like a famous name to work with.”

During recording session with Skateboard P, Adams learned something that he didn’t know he had — sensory deprivation. “I always carry around with me a notepad with like a journal,” he explained. “It’s like my road book. Anything that I feel or think about I write down.”

“I was having a conversation with [Pharrell] and I pulled out the notepad and he was like, ‘What are you doing? What’s that?’ I was like, ‘This notebook, I write everything down,” he said. “Even on planes, or anything funny that happens or anything anywhere, if I have an idea, I write it down right away.’ Same thing with the memo pad on my iPhone. He was like, ‘Whoa, no one does that at your age. No one.’”

Pharrell was amazed by Adams’ instinct to jot things down no matter the setting and diagnosed him with sensory deprivation. “And I was like, ‘I don’t know what the f— that is,’” Adams says matter-of-factly.

“But he explained it, when it rains you can’t really hear anything other than the rain so it either sparks a lot of ideas in your head, because your sort of deprived of hearing all the noises around you, or when you’re in a plane, you’re constantly moving so you can’t feel any other way than that you’re moving and you get all your thoughts out,” he says. “It’s really cool, because the way he explained it made perfect sense. You never know when you’re gonna write a line that makes you famous or a song that could make you famous. You just always have to stay open to the possibility that it can happen.”

Fans can check out Sammy Adams’ sensory deprivation when he embarks on his fall tour with 3OH!3. The trek kicks off Sept. 27 in Richmond, Va., and wraps up in Adams’ hometown of Boston on Halloween.
