Hip-hop titans Rick Ross, Dr. Dre and Jay-Z have been slapped with a lawsuit by a pair of gospel songwriters over a sample used in Rozay’s song ‘Three Kings.’ Producer Jake One and Universal Music Group are also named in the lawsuit.

According to, Clara Shepherd Warrick and Jimmy Lee Weary are suing the parties involved because they didn’t properly clear the sample of their 1976 song, ‘I’m So Grateful (Keep In Touch).’ The lawsuit, which was filed on Thursday (Feb. 7) in U.S. District Court of Illinois, states that Weary, the song’s co-writer, never gave Ross permission to use the song nor received compensation for its usage.

Not only that, the gospel duo are offended at how the sample was used because the song’s unsavory message goes against their core spiritual values.

“Defendants have hijacked music and lyrics that were written by Plaintiffs to be performed only as spiritually uplifting gospel music and have laced Plaintiffs’ gospel work with unsavory language such as ‘If you real, motherf—er scream cheers,’ ‘[If] the bitch bad I got her in red bottoms [and] ‘N—-s couldn’t f— with my daughter’s room,'” the lawsuit states. They also didn’t like the Dre Films-directed video because of its depiction of nudity, drug usage and violence.

In Rozay’s defense, his attorneys did respond to Weary’s initial cease-and-desist letter back in November 2012, and replied that they did get proper permission to use the sample. Although they didn’t provide any proof to Weary and his attorney.

The lawsuit puts a small damper on Ross’ excitement for his album, ‘God Forgives, I Don’t,’ which is nominated in the Best Rap Album category at Sunday’s Grammy Awards. Jay-Z is also up with six nominations at the music gala.

Lawyers for Ross, Dr. Dre and Jay-Z have not comment on the legal matter.
