Olivia Cooke’s Art3mis Invites You to the Cyber-Future in First Look at Her ‘Ready Player One’ Character
Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One is imminent, And while the trailer gave us a pretty overwhelming look at the inside of the OASIS, we still have yet to see what the dystopian reality looks like outside of the virtual world. As it turns out, it looks much like ours, except with more neon lighting and slightly cooler outfits.
Empire released a new look at our hero Wade Watts’ lady friend Samantha Evelyn Cook (Olivia Cooke), also known as Art3mis inside the OASIS. She’s got all the cool sci-fi heroine outfit tropes: tights with shorts, some weird vest thing, a VR visor. And, uh, that’s definitely a Joy Division T-shirt.
Art3mis is a fellow gunter, which is the word for young pop culture-obsessed folk scouring the OASIS for Easter eggs left behind by its creator. Ready Player One is practically drenched in the pop culture of the ’80s and ’90s, which is what the OASIS’ creator drew from to make his scavenger hunt — and whoever finds the ultimate prize becomes king of the virtual world. Or queen.
In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.
But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.
Ready Player One hits theaters March 30, 2018.
