New Blocks Being Built with Next-Gen Tetris

Tetris

This morning, Ubisoft and the Tetris Company (co-owned by the original designer of Tetris, Alexey Pajitnov) announced they are partnering up to celebrate Tetris’ 30 year anniversary on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The teaming up of one of the most famous puzzle franchises in history with the French juggernaut of game development will result in the modernization of everyone’s favorite block builder.

After selling over 170 million physical copies since the series’ inception back in 1984 and having over 385 million paid mobile downloads, Tetris has always maintained itself as the brain teaser that nearly anyone is able to pick up and play. In a press release announcing the partnership, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot, stated, “We’re very excited to start working with this world-renowned brand, and can’t wait to combine Ubisoft’s expertise and all the capacities of next-gen consoles to create an exciting new Tetris experience for fans.”

Ubisoft obviously needs no introduction. It’s history with the Assassin’s Creed, Just Dance, Tom Clancy, and Rayman franchises reminds us it’s easily one of the top names in the industry to handle the newest incarnation of Tetris. Sure, there have been plenty of attempts in the past at trying to modernize Tetris, such as TetriNET and the more recent console versions of Tetris. Still, we have a feeling given the Xbox One’s and PlayStation 4′s capabilities and multiplayer capacity, Tetris in the modern era is going to be quite the treat.

There’s no word on when to expect the next Tetris, but we’ll let you know more as soon as it’s announced.
