After a breakout role in the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, it was only a matter of time before Millie Bobby Brown made her feature film debut. Many fans of the Star Wars films   have pointed out her uncanny resemblance to a young Carrie Fisher and raised the possibility of a Princess Leia standalone movie. And while that film seems destined to happen at some point  —  after all, for better or worse, the internet typically gets what it wants  —  it appears that Brown has targeted another blockbuster science fiction franchise for her big screen break out.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (via Vulture), Brown has signed on for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2014 reboot of the Godzilla franchise. While the article doesn’t offer any insight into the role that she is playing, I feel pretty comfortable speculating that she’s the daughter of one of the main characters and mature well beyond her years.

Historically, when a young actor sticks with the science fiction or fantasy genres when starting out, I’d worry that they might be backing themselves into a corner, but actresses like Scarlett Johansson have proven that the lines between genre and art film are increasingly blurred these days. Hollywood wants blockbusters, not individual star power, and Brown already has one blockbuster series to her name. That’s all that really matters.

As we reported back in October  —  and everyone else finally got around to confirming earlier this week — the film is being both written and directed by Michael Dougherty. This should bode well for fans of the Godzilla series. In his previous films Krampus and Trick ‘r Treat, Dougherty demonstrated an ability to juggle humor and horror in equal amounts, a necessary tonal balance needed for wide release action movies. Dougherty’s work suggests that he can walk a fine line between some of the campy humor of its predecessors and the draining seriousness of the 2014 Godzilla reboot.

With yet another of our favorite Hollywood talents on board, Dougherty’s Godzilla film is starting to reignite some excitement about this franchise. Keep an eye out for more updates about the film; after all, Godzilla: King of the Monsters won’t roar into theaters until March 22, 2019, meaning we’ve still got a long, long way to go.
