It really is a pleasure to burn at the start of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, mostly because protagonist Guy Montag hasn’t yet understood the evils of destroying history and culture at the behest of a despotic totalitarian government. Ahead of Comic Con, HBO has released our very first look at Michael B. Jordan as Montag and Michael Shannon as his sinister mentor Beatty, and let’s just say, for firemen, these two look very cool.

The first image from the film shows Jordan and Shannon in their fireman outfits, which, far from today’s day-glo yellow affairs, are made of darlky-colored leather and canvas. The firemen in this dystopia don’t save people from blazes — they start them. You can also see what looks like a patch next to Jordan’s left shoulder that reads “451,” the temperature at which paper begins to burn.

Shannon’s face in this is his characteristic dead-eyed villain look, which means he’s either thinking, “Yes, Michael, yesss. Burn themmm,” or wondering what he’s going to order for takeout that night. You just never know.

Director Ramin Bahrani’s (99 Homes) movie doesn’t yet have a release date, but hopefully HBO gives us some more news on that front once during SDCC.

Fahrenheit 451 also stars Laura Harrier, Sofia Boutella and Lilly Singh.
