Our 2016 fall movie preview focused entirely on theatrical movies, with one crucial exception. We couldn’t leave out Mascots, the new movie from Christopher Guest. It may be debuting on Netflix instead of in theaters around the country, but it’s easily one of our most anticipated movies of the fall. To watch this trailer is to understand why.

Guest and his team are the masters of the faux documentary, a style helped pioneer with This Is Spinal Tap, and then perfected in movies like Waiting for Guffman and Best in ShowMascots serves up a perfect Guestian mock-doc premise: Following the competitors at “The Fluffies,” a national competition to determine the country’s greatest sports mascot. The cast includes lots of Guest veterans like Fred Willard, Bob Balaban, and Jennifer Coolidge, and a few newcomers like Zach Woods and Chris O’Dowd, who plays the “bad boy” of the “sport mascottery” world as the hockey mascot “The Fist.” There is no way that could become fodder for some kind of sex joke.

Via Netflix, here’s the film’s official plot synopsis:

Mascots is a new comedy from Christopher Guest, director of Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show. Starring many of his regular troupe of actors, this latest film takes place in the ultra-competitive world of sports mascots where they compete for the most prestigious award in their field, the Gold Fluffy.

As we noted in our fall preview, it’s been way too long since Guest made a fake documentary. The drought finally ends on October 13, when Mascots debuts on Netflix. Maybe the silliest mascot win.
