Those ‘Justice League’ Reshoots Were Done to ‘Lighten Up’ the Tone of Cyborg
Productions go into reshoots for all sorts of reasons. The tooth-gnashing crowd’s favorite is that a movie has been ruled such an unmitigated disaster that the only recourse is to go back and fix it, attempting to wallpaper over the incompetence with fresh footage. But usually, the cause is more banal — such-and-such actor needs to pick up this teapot with his right hand, character X needs to be shown moving from Point A to Point B, and other matters of logistics. There was plenty of puzzling over what factors could compel the Justice League production to bring in Joss Whedon to shoot what is called “pick-up” after he wrapped up for a grief-stricken Zack Snyder, and a new interview with a cast member has shed a little light on the situation.
IGN ran a snippet of a new interview with Joe Morton, who portrays the father of Justice League member Cyborg in the upcoming film, and the actor revealed that he was present for some of Whedon’s reshoots. And when needled about what changes have been made, he didn’t completely demur:
Well, the stuff that I had to do were just really small little bits and pieces, nothing necessarily having to do with tone. I know that with Ray [Fisher], the young man who plays Victor, there were some adjustments that they made in terms of the tone of that character. I think what I heard was that there was a need from the studio to lighten up the film in a way, that the film felt too dark. I don’t know what that meant in terms of how it actually got translated in terms of the reshoots but that’s what I heard.
A little vague, but it’s not nothing! This early signal that the film may have some semblance of a sense of humor towards itself is certainly heartening. The film’s November 17 release is fast approaching — do you smell that? It’s the Justice League Wars. It’s only a matter of time.
