I have been reading Jay-Z's book"Decoded." It made the list of New York Times Best Sellers. His book is about his lyrics their meanings and the story of his succes in the music bussiness. I really have been enjoying it and would recommend it to anyone. Last night I came across a chapter that was interesting to me and gave a little insight into the world of music behind the scenes. Jay-Z talks about the difference and tension in hip-hop between the actual art verse the commercial product. I know that there is some sort of commercialization in music no matter what that is part of the industry. It was just interesting to me to hear Jay-Z talk about how much he apprecaites the radio. He mentions he knows some artist do not like the radio that they believe people should just be buying and listening to their records not dealing with the "shady," radio bussiness. I was surprised to hear this and of course had to take some interest because that is my life. Jay-Z continues to say that he disagrees with this mentality and thinks that radio play is what relates you to your people.
He tells the story of his first time at the house hanging out feeding his fish when he suddenly saw himself on BET. He mentions it was one of the most statisfying moments like the first time he heard his radio play. His point is that he cares for the regular person. He wants guys and girls rolling down the streets listening in their cars. He wants to reach those who get their music from the clubs, the radio and television. I love this passion he is sharing. He says he wants to play music where people live, where he can make it personal about what he is rapping about. I feel like that is what music is about and how it should be. It is interesting to hear a mogle like Jay-Z talk about the importance of the radio and how the radio brings the artist close to their listeners.
Whether or not your a Jay-Z fan it is a really interesting, well written and fun book to read so check it out...Decoded and remember its all about the radio baby:)
