In 2007, Zac Efron, fresh off his star-making turn as Disney Channel heartthrob Troy Bolton in the High School Musical series, dazzled as hunky Link Larkin in the remake of John Waters' 1988 film, Hairspray.

From his slick coif to his glistening smile, Efron was perfectly cast... and, apparently, difficult to top.

NBC aired their live television special Hairspray Live! on Wednesday night (December 7), and while the musical had its fair share of highs (Dove Cameron!) and lows (Derek Hough...), some viewers just couldn't get into Garrett Clayton, another Disney Channel star (Teen Beach Movie), playing Link.

Instead, many wondered why NBC hadn't cast Glee alum Darren Criss—who instead played host, "I guess," for the evening—as the iconic Corny Collins Show dancer.
