‘Game of Thrones’ Final Season Filming This Fall, 2018 Premiere Possible

Game of Thrones Final Season 8 Production 2018

Game of Thrones production requires long enough lead that by the time we’re watching a season, the cast is already headed back to work. The final six episodes may be a different story, but one star says they’re headed back to work soon, which could pinpoint a 2018 premiere.

Collider spoke with star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who intimated he would read the first Game of Thrones Season 8 scripts in the coming weeks, likely heading back to work in October. Spoiler alert: we’re guessing Jaime Lannister isn’t horribly killed this Sunday, or in next week’s Season 7 finale:

You get the scripts a month before we start shooting, or six weeks, and then you know what’s going to happen that season. But, I don’t know what’s going to happen next season. We go back in October, so maybe in the next few weeks, we’ll get the scripts and I’ll find out. I’m very curious.

As Collider points out, each season has taken approximately one year to produce, regardless of shortened episode orders. That could place Season 8 in a fall 2018 timeslot, but HBO has been unwilling to nail down a premiere window, so the final season may end up delayed to 2019 for further post-production time.

Either way, we’ve likely got spinoffs to come after Game of Thrones wraps the final season, so we’re never getting off this train. Check out the trailer for Sunday’s “Beyond The Wall” in the meantime, and stay tuned.
