For as long as Game of Thrones has existed, its Song of Ice and Fire title has inspired hope of a meeting between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. We may get our wish in Season 7, but Emilia Clarke has bad news for anyone hoping the two end up happily ever after.

Granted, there’s a long road between now and the Season 8 finale in likely 2019, Clarke told S/ Magazine the Mother of Dragons isn’t likely to shift attention from conquering Westeros to any kind of regal courtship. There’s always the chance Daenerys and Jon share some fleeting connection (if they meet at all), but it could be some time before those kids join Ice and Fire:

I think that she has ultimately put aside her own need for a man. She is so engaged and wrapped up in leading and being the queen and ruling and fulfilling her birth right that the idea of someone coming in and sharing that title is probably something she’s not comfortable with.

Even if Dany gets herself settled in Kings’ Landing, joins up with Jon to defeat the White Walkers and both survive, there’s no reason to think her technical nephew would even want to share the Iron Throne regardless. Jon barely accepted the “King in the North” title (it didn’t work out great for the last guy), so there’s plenty of hope to be wiggled through Clarke’s comments.

We’ll see if Clarke’s words end up challenged a month from now, but watch the Game of Thrones Season 7 trailer below, and stay tuned.
