The Golden Globes are notoriously harder to predict than the Emmys (at least for TV), and one wonders if the HFPA will continue to reward new series, despite Game of Thrones finishing one of its best years. It’s all in the family for HBO, at least, as George R.R. Martin thinks Westworld might win out over Season 6.

The Game of Thrones author suggested as much in his famous LiveJournal blog (h/t EW), noting that Westworld was more likely to take home Best TV Drama than Season 6 of his HBO adaptation. Thrones won the Emmy as such earlier this year, though last year’s Globes favored newcomer Mr. Robot over Westeros. Wrote Martin:

Being an HBO guy, I’m thrilled that to see that both GAME OF THRONES and WESTWORLD have been nominated for the big prize… though WESTWORLD is going to be some tough competition. (In fact, I would figure WW for the favorite). And as an science fiction and fantasy geek, I am also delighted to see that STRANGER THINGS made the list. Three out of five finalists being genre shows… and during this golden age of television… is another sign of just how far we’ve come.

Worth noting, even if Westworld wins out, the two HBO dramas will also compete for Best TV Actress between Game of Thrones star Lena Headey, and Westworld breakout Thandie Newton. As EW had Jonathan Nolan put it after the nominations:

You don’t ‘compete’ against Game of Thrones so much as be happy you’re in the same conversation. That’s a magnificent show and we’re thrilled and flattered to be in the same conversation.

Time will tell if the 2017 Golden Globes bring any true upsets, but does Martin have a point about Westworld winning out over Game of Thrones? Do I detect a little distancing, from a season not borne of his own writing?
