Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’ Trailer Rises From The Grave

Frankenweenie Trailer
Walt Disney Pictures

In 1984, a young Disney animator named Tim Burton directed his live-action debut, the short film ‘Frankenweenie.’ Disney planned for the short to run before a theatrical re-release of ‘Pinocchio,’ but once they screened the completed project, they fired Burton on the spot.

Burton, of course, went on to a somewhat legendary career as a filmmaker and in 2010 made Disney over $1 billion on ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ And now, in 2012, Disney is finally OK with the idea of a little boy who brings his dead dog back to life.

Black and white, stop-motion animated films aren’t exactly box-office gold, but Burton’s pedigree alone was enough to get this 3D remake made. As you can see in the trailer below, it’s a loose adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic ‘Frankenstein’ tale with a very Tim Burton-y touch.  (The animation is reminiscent of the director’s last stop-motion outing, 2005′s ‘The Corpse Bride.’) This time out, Burton’s even brought with him ‘Beetlejuice’ stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, and ‘Ed Wood’ alum Martin Landau. (Shelly Duvall and Daniel Stern starred in the original ‘Frankenweenie.’)

‘Frankenweenie’ hits theaters on October 5th, just in time for Halloween. Check out the freaky trailer below.
