It may not have made a lick of sense within the emotional continuity of the series, but it’s hard to argue that the comedic highlight of The Fate of the Furious was Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s snappy banter. Johnson’s Hobbs winds up in jail right across the hall from his old arch-nemesis Deckard Shaw, played by Statham, and their chemistry is immediate and hilarious. Their playful back-and-forth throughout F8 kept things light and fun even as Vin Diesel’s Dom sold out his beloved family to work for Charlize Theron’s evil hacker Cipher.

If you saw Fate of the Furious, you or someone you went with almost definitely walked out of the theater saying something along the lines of “The Rock and Statham were the best part! They should get their own movie together.” Well, Universal apparently agrees with you, you very smart people. Deadline reports the studio is developing a potential spinoff for Hobbs and Shaw:

The idea is for Johnson’s US Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs to form an unlikely alliance with Statham’s Decker Shaw, for a movie that could conceivably be made while they are figuring the next Fast film.

The project is in early stages at the moment, but Deadline notes that the studio has consulted with Fast story maven Chris Morgan, who’s written every Furious film since Tokyo Drift, about the possible side project. He “hasn’t begun writing” yet however. (No word yet on what series star and producer Vin Diesel thinks of all this.)

If this works out, wonderful. If it doesn’t, who cares? Just put Statham and Johnson together in a different, non-Fast and Furious action movie. The important thing here is their chemistry; the characters are totally secondary. Fate of the Furious proved those two make a terrific oil-and-water onscreen combo. So let’s make more, uh, oily water.
