‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Sequel Has a Title, Will Bring Back Emily Blunt

While Doug Liman may be hard at work promoting his upcoming war thriller The Wall, that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten about an Edge of Tomorrow sequel. Last October, Liman promised that the movie was still moving forward, with the director even going so far as to suggest that the second film would “revolutionize” how people thought about movie sequels. And now Liman has dropped a few exciting updates, including a new title for the film and the promise of returning stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The short version? It’s happening, dopey name or not.

In a recent interview with Collider, Liman shared the full title for his sequel and described the two actors from the first movie as chomping at the bit to make a sequel. Here’s what he had to say:

We have an amazing story! It’s incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film. It will be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Tom is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it. The big question is just when we’ll do it. But it’s not an if, it’s a when.

There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s start with the name. After the confusing home video rebrand of the original movie  —  where Edge of Tomorrow was downplayed in favor of the Live Die Repeat tagline-slash-sorta-title  —  this seems like kind of an odd choice for a name. You can mock the uninspired naming conventions of movie sequels all you want, but they do suggest a clear connection between the original feature and the subsequent entries. Live Die Repeat and Repeat, other than just sort of being clunky in-and-of itself, seems to confuse the branding a bit between the first movie and the second one. If I were one of the decision makers at Warner Bros., first thing I’d do is probably convince Liman to change that name.

That being said, everything else here is great news. Tom Cruise is back! Emily Blunt is back! Liman loves the screenplay! And it’s as close to a sure thing as you can get in Hollywood! The original Edge of Tomorrow (or whatever we’re supposed to call it) was a science-fiction action movie that hailed back to the early work of James Cameron, combining a few clever ideas with some world-class action sequences to create one of the best summer movies of the decade. Honestly, even if Liman decided to call the movie The One Where Tom Cruise Does Time Travel 2, I’d still be first in line for the film when it comes out. I can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with for this one.
