With Warcraft out of the way, Duncan Jones now has time to finally start production on his passion project, Mute. Mute is a sequel of sorts to 2009’s Moon, although the idea for a Berlin-set futuristic sci-fi was germinating before Moon started. The project kept being put on hold again and again, as Jones was busy with Source Code and then this year’s Warcraft, but today he announced that he’s going to start shooting Mute next week.

Jones made the announcement on his Twitter, where he shared some concept art for the film. It’s been described as having notes of Casablanca, Paul Schrader’s Hardcore, Robert Altman’s MASH, and, obviously, Blade Runner. Alexander Skarsgård and Paul Rudd have been onboard the film since last November, and Sam Rockwell is also set to reprise his role of Sam Bell from Moon, to tie the two movies together. Clint Mansell is also returning to score the film.

Here’s the synopsis:

Berlin. Forty years from today. A roiling city of immigrants, where East crashes against West in a science-fiction Casablanca. Leo Beiler (Skarsgard), a mute bartender has one reason and one reason only for living here, and she’s disappeared. But when Leo’s search takes him deeper into the city’s underbelly, an odd pair of American surgeons (led by Rudd) seem to be the only recurring clue, and Leo can’t tell if they can help, or who he should fear most.

Jones also had plans for a graphic novel, which has been put on hold for the movie. He had hoped that the novel’s sales would help with financing the movie, but fortunately that didn’t end up being necessary. Mute doesn’t have a release date yet, but if production goes well, we could be seeing the next installment in the Moon trilogy very soon.
