Duncan Jones’ ‘Moon’ Sequel ‘Mute’ Finds a Home on Netflix

The jump from more indie-fare like the subtle Moon and Source Code to this summer’s blockbusting Warcraft was, let’s say, unexpected, but director Duncan Jones’ projects usually have this uncanny way of working themselves out. Last week, Jones announced that he was starting to shoot Mute, the sequel to Moon, this week. Mute is the movie he originally wanted to make before he decided to have Moon be his first feature, and now, it looks like Mute is heading to Netflix.

One of the stars, Alexander Skarsgard, spoke to Empire about the movie and said, “I think they’ll do what they did with Beasts Of No Nation, where they do a theatrical simultaneously to a Netflix release.”

Mute is currently in production in Berlin, where it’s set. It’s a futuristic noir tale about a mute bartender who gets embroiled in the workings of the city’s dark underbelly after someone he knows disappears. Here’s the full synopsis:

Berlin. Forty years from today. A roiling city of immigrants, where East crashes against West in a science-fiction Casablanca. Leo Beiler (Skarsgard), a mute bartender has one reason and one reason only for living here, and she’s disappeared. But when Leo’s search takes him deeper into the city’s underbelly, an odd pair of American surgeons (led by Rudd) seem to be the only recurring clue, and Leo can’t tell if they can help, or who he should fear most.

Mute also stars Paul Rudd, and Sam Rockwell is reprising his role as astronaut Sam Bell from Moon. Clint Mansell is also back to score the film. Mute was actually supposed to appear as a graphic novel first to see how audiences responded to it before making the film, but by and by Jones got his wish, and the movie will be coming to our computer screens, and maybe the multiplex, sometime in 2017.
