Dolce + Gabbana Might Need Some Stylish Jumpsuits – They’ve Just Been Sentenced to Prison

Is prison couture the next big trend in fashion?

Sadly, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana — yes, the Dolce and the Gabbana of the beloved-by-celebs Dolce & Gabbana design house, pictured above with fashionista Katy Perry — were sentenced to 20 months in prison for tax evasion in their native Italy.

Neither designer appeared at the Milan sentencing. They deny the charges and plan to appeal.

Here’s the back story: According to Forbes, they have been investigated since 2007, with officials inquiring into 2004, 2005 and 2006. When D&G sold their business to a holding company in Luxembourg in 2004, they reportedly undervalued it in order to avoid paying Italian taxes related to the transaction. They stand accused of attempting to dodge taxes on the equivalent of $1.3 billion U.S. dollars.

An earlier decision in their favor was overturned by the Italian supreme court and sent back to trial (because if there’s anything the Amanda Knox saga has taught us, it’s that Italy doesn’t have a double-jeopardy rule). The famed designers were then fined and charged criminally.

Celeb fans of the brand and its sexy wares are far and wide — Madonna, Selena Gomez, Megan Fox, Halle Berry, Taylor Swift and countless others are often dressed by the designers for assorted red carpet events.

But D&G are not the only designers to deal with questions about their books and finances. Valentino and Roberto Cavalli have dealt with similar issues related to their wealth, too.

Will we be seeing D&G label jailhouse jumpsuits on the S/S 2014 runway? Only time will tell.
