The other day I came across a story about a guy in Michigan who got a ticket for simply warming up his car. The ridiculous part is that his car was parked in his own driveway.

The story was originally posted by a radio station in New York after they saw the Facebook post from Nick Taylor, who received the ticket in Rozeville, Michigan.

I decided to do a little research to see if there was a similar law in Montana, and sure enough, there is. Here is the law as it reads in Montana:

Unattended Motor Vehicles

61-8-357. Unattended motor vehicles. No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine and effectively setting the brake thereon and, when standing upon any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway in such a manner as to prevent the vehicle from rolling onto the roadway.

If I'm understanding the law correctly, it states that you can, in fact, get a ticket for warming up your car in Montana. How can they expect you to not warm up your car when it's -20 outside?

As far as I know it is a law that is rarely enforced in Montana, but it still seems odd that it would even be a law in the first place. Personally, I'm gonna keep warming up my car. It's worth the risk to be warm on my drive to work.
