The CW’s sexed-up Archie reboot Riverdale might bring in viewers just to find out what this show actually is, given the vague and haunting teasers to date. The newest trailer for the 2017 premiere throws a good deal more murder into the mix as well, including some student-teacher relations for dear-old Archibald.

As if killing off Jason (with a gun to the head!) wasn’t enough to distinguish Riverdale from your usual Archie comics, the newest CW trailer hints at some uncomfortable after-school sessions with the Riverdale faculty. Agent Cooper probably wouldn’t even stop for coffee in this weirdo town.

Now set to premiere Thursday, January 26, Riverdale is described as a “surprising and subversive” take on Archie comics, including the title character, Betty, Veronica and the whole gang. Among the cast, there’s Lili Reinhart Cole Sprouse, Ashleigh Murray, Luke Perry, KJ Apa, Madelaine Petsch, Camila Mendes, Marisol Nichols and Twin Peaks alum Mädchen Amick.

So reads the synopsis:

The live-action series offers a bold, compelling take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge, and will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books—including Archie’s rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones.

We’ll find out for sure on January 24, but is Riverdale just crazy enough a take on Archie to work?
