Chief Keef and Chicago Rap at Center of ‘Chiraq’ Episode One [VIDEO]

Artists like Chief Keef and Lil Durk are the subject of an eight-part series titled ‘Chiraq,’ in which the environment shaping their artistry in Chicago is explored as well as the city’s drill music scene.

Vice premiered the doc today, which was named after the city’s street and gang violence. In the first episode, Vice host Thomas goes to Englewood, one of the “most dangerous neighborhoods in the city of Chicago” to meet Keef. The ‘I Don’t Like’ rapper is unavailable due to legal issues so the camera spends time with producer Young Chop, Durk and Lil Reese. They also speak to local police and religious leaders who contribute their take on the violence going on in the city and the effect Keef’s success has on the violence.

Reactions online have been mixed since the doc’s premiere. Many applaud the efforts to investigate Chicago’s burgeoning rap scene while others find the doc as glorifying violence and the choice of narrator as inorganic. “Lord have mercy, this ‘Chiraq’ documentary is the quintessence of cultural tourism,” tweeted blogger B. Dot of Rap Radar. “Dude hosting this Noisey Chiraq documentary very uncomfortable around minorities,” added Bauce Sauce.
