Cara Delevingne Responds To ‘Suicide Squad’ Reviews, Says Critics Don’t Like Superhero Movies

When a movie gets bad reviews, it must mean something is wrong with the critics, right? Those darn critics, they don’t like anything!

Suicide Squad opens this week and the reviews are uh, not good. The Warner Bros. film currently has a 27 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 41. Cara Delevingne, who plays the Enchantress in the movie, recently responded to the negative reviews at the film’s London premiere. “You know, I just don’t think they like superhero movies,” the model, actress told Reuters. She went on to say that the reviews don’t matter to her, only whether or not the fans like the movie:

This movie isn’t perfect, but it’s a wonderful film. I think the characters are incredible. It doesn’t really matter what the critics say, at the end of the day it’s the fans we make the movie for.

But can you really assume being a superhero movie fan and being a film critic are mutually exclusive? Well no, that’s silly. Lots of critics love superhero films and many are comic book fans as well. Look at the reviews for Captain America: Civil War, which has a 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and which we gave a good review. Or Guardians of the Galaxy, which is 91 percent fresh. And for all the DC fanboys out there with Marvel conspiracy theories, there were some critics who liked Man of Steel.

Suicide Squad director David Ayer defended the film to Reuters at the premiere saying, “I made the movie for real people who live in the real world. I made the movie for people who actually love movies and go and see movies.” Oh wait sorry, I forgot critics are fictional creatures who don’t live in the real world. (We’re all robots paid off my Marvel and Warner Bros. but don’t tell anyone I told you.)

There’s this constant perception that movie critics are just carbon copies of Ratatouille‘s Anton Ego, Dementors behind a keyboard sucking the joy out of all movie lover’s dreams. But guess what? The people who write about movies for a living also love movies! We are are fans, too! I know, crazy.

There’s a lot of reasons movies get bad reviews, and after all, reviews are subjective by nature, so opinions can vary. You can keep hating on critics or sign that DC fan Change.org petition (which actually doesn’t grasp an understanding of how Rotten Tomatoes works), but no one is saying you’re not allowed to like Suicide Squad. If you really enjoy something, you won’t let a bad review ruin it for you.
