Gov. Steve Bullock has vetoed a bill that would have required parental permission before students could attend sex-education classes in public schools.

Bullock said in his veto message Thursday that House Bill 239 would have intruded on the Board of Public Education and local school boards' constitutional authority over schools.

The Republican-led House and Senate passed the measure during the recently ended session. The bill would have required schools to give parents and guardians a minimum 48 hours' notice that included the content of what was to be taught.

It also would have banned any organization that provides abortion services from assisting with sex education.

Bullock says the bill reflected an unfounded mistrust of educators and that parents can address any concerns they have with their local schools.
