Montana State University's chief of police issued a statement about a stabbing on campus Tuesday afternoon, letting people know that two people are in custody and there does not appear to be a threat to campus safety.

At 3:39 p.m. Tuesday, a message from MSU Chief of Police Robert Putzke was posted on the school’s Facebook page. It states:

Dear Campus Community,

Tonight and tomorrow you will see many media reports about a stabbing at MSU. This email is to give you the most current narrative of events as we know them:

At around 12:14 p.m. today, a report came into MSU Police dispatch of a man bleeding from the neck in the Strand Union Building. MSU Police Officers were on the scene within a minute of the call. The man reported that he had been in a fight and had been cut on the neck with a knife. Descriptions of when and where the attack had taken place were conflicting.

At 12:30 p.m. the man was transported to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital for treatment.

At 12:50 p.m. the first of several MSU Alerts was issued using the best information authorities had at the time.

Subsequent conversations with the victim at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital revealed that the attack had not happened in the SUB as previously thought, but in a residence of Family and Graduate Housing, a multi-block area of mixed housing units west of the campus core.

Police Officers investigated the victim’s residence in Family and Graduate Housing and took two suspects into custody, a man and a woman. Both are being held for questioning. The university communicated to the campus at 1:53 p.m. that the suspects were in custody. The suspects were known to the victim, but the circumstances of the attack are still being investigated. MSU does not have information on the victim’s condition at this time.

MSU believes this was an incident involving a dispute between individuals and that there is no wider threat to campus safety.

Sincerely,
Robert Putzke
MSU Chief of Police

UPDATED:  At 1:59 p.m., the MSU Police Department issued the following release: Two suspects are in custody. The incident is currently under investigation. You may resume normal campus activity.

This update was sent via text after other alerts from Montana State University went out Tuesday afternoon after a student was reportedly stabbed.

The first text alert was sent at 1:03 p.m., advising people to avoid the Strand Union Building where they believed the stabbing occurred. A short while later, police sent out another alert, clarifying that it appears the assault happened at the campus’ family housing.

The SUB was cleared for normal activities, the alert added.
