Looks like the studio behind Bad Moms is creeping in on Wes Anderson’s territory: STX Entertainment is reportedly developing a spinoff to this summer’s hit comedy, this time focusing on not-so-great dads. Let’s be honest, though — Bad Dads could describe Wes Anderson’s whole filmography (there’s even an Anderson art tribute show and book with that title), but it could also easily describe most studio comedies.

That’s part of what made Bad Moms so successful this summer: We’ve seen plenty of comedies featuring irresponsible and morally questionable dads, but not nearly enough that humorously depict moms in the same light — that’s the central comedic conceit, really. But according to The Wrap, STX wants to capitalize on the success of Bad Moms with a Bad Dads spinoff, indicating a real misunderstanding of what made their comedy a hit (aside from the fact that it was a pretty lame summer, so audiences were eager for any film to be remotely enjoyable).

Starring Mila Kunis, Christina Applegate and Kathryn Hahn, Bad Moms grossed $170.8 million worldwide on a budget of just $20 million — yet another mid-budget success story at a time when many major studios are increasingly focused on big budget blockbusters. And yet, STX appears to be following the ongoing trend of putting all their eggs in one franchise basket: In addition to Bad Dads (hitting theaters in 2017), the studio has announced plans for “a series of film spin-offs, a reality television show, short form digital content, and a robust consumer products program” — whatever that last one means. Bad Moms-branded hand towels?

Whatever the case, get ready for the Bad Moms extended cinematic universe.
