It’s officially on like Donkey Kong for season 12 of ‘American Idol‘ as the top 10 — five guys, five girls — took the stage Wednesday night to engage in the heat of the battle…of the belters, that is. They sang songs by former ‘Idols’ and more.

Here’s how thing shook out during the performances. The first of the 10 is slated to be eliminated Thursday, so be sure and tune in to find who’s going home.

THE MEN:

Paul Jolley: He sang Lonestar’s ‘Amazed,’ which is a beautiful ballad. He wants to be a country singer, so this was not a shocking choice for the happily last-named singer. Expect more of the same from him if he moves forward.

Curtis Finch, Jr: He rocked ‘I Believe’ by onetime ‘Idol’ Fantasia Barrino and he made us believe. His voice is unstoppable but he needs to step out of his comfort zone and try new things. Maybe next week?

Devin Velez: The bilingual belter tackled Carrie Underwood’s ‘Temporary Home’ and most of the panel felt it was a “safe” choice despite his personal connection with the lyrics.

Lazaro Arbos: He broke away with Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Breakaway’ and split the judges down the middle. Some felt it was too big of a song for him. Others claimed to fall in love with him.

Burnell Taylor: He showed his “Burnellisms” with Westlife’s ‘Flying Without Wings.’ He’s unexpected and eccentric, but usually flaw-free. He’s a clear frontrunner.

THE WOMEN:

Janelle Arthur: The country cutie sang Scotty McCreery’s ‘Gone.’ The judges liked her confidence, but prefer ballads for her voice.

Angie Miller: Her room-filling voice was gorgeous when she tackled Celine Dion’s ‘I Surrender.’

Candice Glover: She got passionate on Ben E. King’s ‘I (Who Have Nothing).’

Kree Harrison: We enjoyed another solid performance from this country wannabe — this time with Roy Orbison’s ‘Crying.’

Amber Holcomb: Kelly Clarkson had another one of her tracks done right. Holcomb’s rendition of ‘A Moment Like This’ was one of the best of the evening.
